The largest financial companies and insurance companies in Denmark are no longer only working on a national level. Banks, mortgage credit companies and insurance companies are seeking to expand their business to new markets.

Banks in Denmark

Danske Bank and Nordea are the two dominant banks in Denmark. Danske Bank is a Danish bank which has expanded their business to Sweden, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. Nordea has its headquarters in Sweden but has a strong market position in all of the Nordic countries including Denmark. In total Nordea is present in 19 countries around the world.

Other larger banks in Denmark include Jyske Bank, Spar Nord Bank, Sydbank, Vestjysk Bank and the investment bank Saxo Bank which offers an international internet-based investment trading platform.

Danish banks often provide a full range of financial services for corporate, institutional as well as for private customers.

Mortgage credit companies

Mortgage lending is very common in Denmark. Danish mortgage credit companies offer mortgage lending secured by industrial, commercial, residential or agricultural properties. Most mortgage credit companies only operate in Denmark. However these large financial institutions are often interested in finding foreign investors.

Pension funds

The largest Danish pension funds are large financial institutions. Most working Danes pay a percentage of their income to private pension funds in order to obtain a larger pension payment when they retire. Furthermore everyone who works legally in Denmark pays contributions to ATP Livslang Pension. This lifelong supplementary public pension is administrated by the ATP Group.

Both private and public pension funds invest the capital in selected company shares, stocks, bonds and other securities in order to secure the best possible investment return. Danish pension funds primarily invest in Danish companies and Danish bonds. However pension capital is also invested in foreign companies and securities.

Insurance

Danish insurance companies normally operate nationally. However some of the large companies have expanded their business to neighbouring countries. Insurance companies are also increasingly seeking to expand their business to include other financial services like banking.
